Somehow you found this little book, or perhaps it found you as you experience your own milestones toward forgiveness. It’s likely that you’ve been living this “human experience” for a while now, and you probably realized early on that human experience comes with pain. While physical pain usually disappears with time, mental, emotional, and spiritual pain remains and is frequently relived with no end in sight. This pain brings us to a fork in the road between forgiveness and unforgiveness.

The decision is ours to make. Unforgiveness binds us to past offenses and prevents us from moving into the destiny God has for us. Sometimes, we don’t even recognize the presence of unforgiveness in our lives as we go about our human journey, not realizing or recognizing when things could be better, our relationships might be improved, and we could live so much more joyfully.

Forgiveness allows us to embark upon a journey that offers us a pathway to life and freedom beyond the pain and past offense.

The past wounds and offenses we carry with us into life weigh us down and prevent us from getting on with life unfettered. The writer of Hebrews comments on the life of faith versus bondage:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God had set before us (Hebrews 12:1, NLT, emphasis added).

Note the words bolded in the Scripture above: “weight,” “slows us down,” “trips us up.” Do you have unforgiveness in your heart? Are we hauling a bag of offenses behind? Is your spiritual journey compro-mised? Perhaps you already recognize it, but maybe you don’t.

Here are a few questions that may help reveal unresolved hurts and offenses. Consider these questions carefully as you move to the milestones:

  • Do you experience bursts of anger?
  • Are you petty and impulsive in responding to others?
  • Do you insist that an offending party understand how you feel and apologize?
  • Do you wrestle with compulsive behaviors like making unnecessary purchases, cleaning, and comfort eating?

Reviews

When I started reading Journey to Forgiveness: 21 MileStones to Freedom, I was wondering and asking if there was going to be anything different or new. I quickly discovered the answer is, “Yes, for sure.” Journey to Forgiveness is the best “how to forgive” book that I have read or seen.

And it also gives hope for those who wonder if forgiveness is doable or may be asking, “Am I fixable?” The answer is yes.

David Peterson makes forgiveness doable by providing Scriptures, personal stories and examples of those who learned how to forgive and receive forgiveness, personal reflection questions that help identify who and what we need to forgive, ways to connect with the Holy Spirit’s power enabling us to forgive, and simple prayers for each one of the twenty-one milestones to freedom.

Why is it so hard to forgive? When someone hurts us, we know that we should forgive, that it would make life easier. But it’s not easy. Sometimes it is difficult to forgive people who have done us wrong and inflicted Pain and abuse on us. Yet as Christians, we know that forgiveness is central to our faith.

David Peterson has not only written a book on forgiveness but has also lived through his own agony by those who did him wrong. In his book Journey to Forgiveness: 21 Milestones to Freedom, David guides you up the mountain till you reach your final milestone where freedom is your place in God. David’s milestones are like resting points as you climb up the mountain to get ready to reach the next milestone. His wisdom and compassion are demonstrated throughout the journey, and his book will be embraced by those who long to experience the peace and wonder of forgiveness.
